Cole has over forty-five years of experience in handling matters of all kinds, with emphasis in recent years on defense of larger personal injury civil litigation.

Cole was formerly in practice in the Upstate of South Carolina, where he was state counsel for the largest petroleum pipeline company in the United States and also served as U.S. general counsel for one of the world’s oldest manufacturers of sophisticated textile machinery, with headquarters in the Upstate. In that capacity, Cole was involved in a large patent infringement case involving a patent crucial to tow competitors in the textile machinery industry.

Cole also handled litigated matters for a number of liability insurance companies in all counties of the Upstate, as well as across many other counties outside the Upstate, including livestock mortality insurance and the like.

Cole has handled numerous appeals in both state and federal courts, a number of which are reported cases.

Cole is a member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.

Cole is regularly consulted on matters involving complex issues of liability and damages in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and is also regularly assigned the defense of such matters when they enter litigation.

Cole is experienced in developing and recommending strategies to fit the needs of clients in particular case and in handling the questions by clients that inevitably arise about case strategies and the process of litigation.

  • Represented a large liability insurance carier in numerous bad faith claims, achieving dismissal of the majority of those cases and resolution of numerous others well with in acceptable monetary limits for the issues involved.
  • Represented a medium-sized cable television company for over twenty-five years in numerous matters involving both litigation and transactions, including preventing a takeover of some of the company’s assets in the Charleston, South Carolina area by a large development company with a timely injunction action, resulting in a substantial settlement a number of years later.
  • Participated in numerous civil trials in over thirty years in the Upstate in both state and federal courts, including a livestock mortality case in which the owner of a deceased horse claimed it had died of natural causes and had a value nine hundred times that animal’s original purchase price.
  • Participated as his client’s U.S. general counsel in a sophisticated patent infringement case involving several hundred-million dollars, including participation in the preparation of briefs in the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and oral argument in that case.
