Biography

Reggie Belcher represents businesses and employers throughout the Southeast.

The South Carolina Supreme Court has certified Reggie as a specialist in Employment and Labor Law. He is also Certified Mediator and Circuit Court Arbitrator.

He exclusively defends businesses and employers in state and federal courts and before governmental agencies including the EEOC, DOL, OFCCP, SCHAC, and the NLRB. Reggie writes employee handbooks, affirmative action plans, employment contracts, severance agreements, and non-compete and restrictive covenants. He trains supervisors and managers nationwide on compliance issues involving wage and hour laws, workplace harassment, and union avoidance.

Reggie frequently contributes to state and national discussions on legal and business issues at conferences and in publications such as HR Magazine, Inside Counsel, Industry Week, Law360, and South Carolina Lawyers Weekly.

Human Resource Executive Magazine and Lawdragon.com recognized Reggie as one of the "40 Up and Comers" among the national most powerful employment lawyers in 2012-2017. Reggie has been the only attorney selected in either North Carolina or South Carolina on the entire lawdragon 200 list, which included the 100 most powerful employment lawyers in the nation, 60 of the most powerful immigration and labor specialists, and the top 40 up-and-coming most powerful employment lawyers.

Reggie is actively involved in the community, and he formerly chaired the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Division. He also serves on the board of directors for Work-in-Progress, a local non-profit that provides job training for individuals suffering from mental illness. Reggie also currently serves on SC Bar's CLE Specialization Committee.

Representative Matters

Employment Litigation

  • Won summary judgment for a publicly traded company in a class action case alleging race and gender discrimination where the plaintiffs sought damages exceeding $50 million.
  • Won summary judgment for a business executive accused of defamation in a case alleging actual damages of more than $600,000, plus punitive damages.
  • Won summary judgment for a business accused of fraud, conspiracy, breach of fiduciary duty, negligence, and violation of the Unfair Trade Practices Act in a case alleging actual damages of more than $400,000, plus punitive damages.
  • Won summary judgment for various employers in cases alleging discrimination, harassment, and retaliation involving Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Administrative

  • Negotiated with the federal Department of Labor to rescind a demand that an employer pay 14 employees a total of 24 months of back pay in a dispute involving meal and break periods.
  • Negotiated with the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) to rescind a demand that a federal contractor pay back pay damages to dozens of female employees during an audit of the contractor’s affirmative action program.

Appellate

  • Won two employment cases at the South Carolina Court of Appeals where former employees alleged breach of contract based on language contained in their employee handbooks.
  • Won a case at the South Carolina Court of Appeals involving novel personal jurisdictional issues on behalf of a North Carolina employer who was sued in South Carolina.
